Bargain Junkie: Living the Good Life on the Cheap
The market goes up, the market goes down. We’re in a boom, we’re in a recession. We’re told to “live richly,” we’re told to “spend cautiously.” None of this economic see-saw has ever affected me. Since I’ve never had a real job, I’ve had to become a thriftaholic. This book humorously describes my life under the radar.
With minimal cash flow, I’ve managed to have a lovely home, dress well, travel, educate my child, and – most importantly – eat out as often as possible. Bargain Junkie is a collection of funny stories and valuable tips on thrifty living. Thrifty: not cheap. As I explained to Tavis Smiley, Cheap is a rich person who’s a lousy tipper. That’s not me.
Here are some sample tips.
- I had my nails done at a beauty school for seven bucks.
- I gave a neighbor some public speaking coaching, and she delivered a 5-course chicken dinner to my door with enough food to last the whole weekend. No money changed hands.
- Our vacation on a farm in Tuscany included spectacular accommodations and sumptuous meals with wine. Total cost was $200 a day for the two of us.
- We went out to dinner, and used a $50 voucher which I bought on Restaurant.com for four bucks.
What my bargainista philosophy has not allowed me to do is to own a $150,000 Birkin crocodile and diamond bag, or even a measly low-end $9,000 Birkin bag. Somehow, I don’t feel I’ve missed much. I’m perfectly happy with my lightweight, washable, silver Sportsac. I got it brand new on eBay for twelve bucks.
